The Old Cowboy’s Music Show

The History of The Old Cowboy’s Country Music Show

The Old Cowboy’s Country Music Show grew from J.C. Hulsey’s lifelong love of traditional country and western music. Known to his listeners as The Old Cowboy, J.C. created the program to share the songs, singers, and stories that helped shape country music.

The program operates under the umbrella of The Outlaws Radio Network, which is owned and operated by Outlaws Publishing. What began as a radio program later expanded online, allowing listeners beyond the original broadcast area to enjoy the music and discover artists they might not otherwise hear.

J.C. remembers how people enjoyed music before the days of internet radio:

When I was young, if I wanted to hear some good music, I either turned on the radio or got together with some of my buddies for a jam session. Now, with all this new technology, all I have to do is tune in to The Outlaws Radio Network.

Each show is built around the belief that great country music should be judged by the quality of the song and the talent of the performer—not by whether the artist has been recognized by Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry, or Branson. Many of The Old Cowboy’s favorite singers and musicians have never received that kind of national recognition, yet their music is every bit as honest, meaningful, and deserving of an audience.

The artists are selected from J.C.’s personal favorites, respected country legends, listener requests, and talented independent performers who deserve to be heard. The program features songs about cowboys, working people, family, heartache, faith, love, hardship, and everyday life.

More than a collection of recordings, The Old Cowboy’s Country Music Show is meant to feel like a weekly visit with an old friend. Through each selection, The Old Cowboy and The Outlaws Radio Network work to preserve the heritage of country and western music while giving overlooked and independent artists a place where their songs can still be heard and appreciated.
